What to Expect at Goldfish Swim School

We’ve been taking swim classes at Goldfish Swim School for some time now but I have to admit I wasn’t sure what to expect when we first started. It’s very similar to other swim lessons in some respects but Goldfish Swim School has a few more features that make the experience enjoyable for the family.

Here is what to bring with you and what to expect:

Let’s start with your bag. I’d suggest choosing a dedicated bag that you can attached a key chain to. You’ll get a key tag when you join Goldfish Swim School that you’ll use to sign your kids in with so you’ll want to make sure it stays with your swim class gear. Since I have kids with a decent amount of hair, I also keep hair ties on there. Finally, you want to make sure you have whatever clothing you need, either swimsuit or fresh outfit (remember that those still potty training will need reusable swim diapers).

Inside the bag, you’ll want a towel, goggles, and a wet bag (I used this tutorial to make mine a little while back). We’ve been attending class mid-morning so by the time we are ready to leave after class it’s about time for lunch, but otherwise you’ll want to pack a snack or keep a few dollars on hand to grab a something from the snack bar. I also keep a brush and bottle of leave-in conditioner in the bag to get the tangles out.

If you are missing any gear to stock your bag, make sure to check out the merchandise in the lobby.

When you get there, Make sure you stop by the front desk to sign yourself in. I suggest trying to get the kiddos to go to the restroom so they won’t need to go in the middle of their class time. You’ll want to make sure they have on the appropriate swim gear. Lastly, I try to go over what their coach said they needed to work on at the end of the last class. If you get there early enough (or if your kids classes aren’t at the same time) there are books, toys, and a chalk board to play with while you wait for the start of class.

Once the kids get called in to the pool area, you’ve got 25 minutes to watch your little fish through the glass, have a cup of coffee or snack all to yourself, flip through a magazine, or scroll through your phone with the free WiFi – you do you. Just know that Goldfish Swim School runs like clock work so keep your eye on the clock.

Your kids will be going through the curriculum for their lane and working on improving and learning new skills. You’ll get the occasional wave and smile through the glass.

Five minutes until the end of class, parents are invited in to discuss their child’s progress with the coaches. It’s a good time to clarify what they can improve on and how they are doing in class. Every so often they may receive a ribbon for demonstrating a skill or you’ll get a progress report on a card that shows the skills they have mastered or are working on.

Once class is over, you can take advantage of the shower area. With my girls blonde hair, I like to shampoo hair then and there to wash the chlorine out. Goldfish Swim School has tiki huts that serve as changing spaces and a swim suit dryer so you don’t have to deal with a dripping wet suit in the car. There are blow dryers which come in handy if you need to go somewhere or in the colder months especially.

Make sure you drop by the front desk on your way out for any information and so the kiddos can get their weekly prize. Every month is a different theme!

What else to expect? Goldfish Swim School has regular Family Swim Times, member appreciation events, and offers special programs for scouts of groups and birthday parties. Don’t forget fun special events like Trunk-or-Treat, which may vary for each location. Each month you’ll receive the the “Monthly Bubble” e-newsletter which will keep you up to date with activities for the month.

Family Time at Goldfish Swim School

My husband has had to do some traveling for work so this has been the perfect excuse to take advantage of the family swim times at Goldfish Swim School in Dayton, Ohio.

We’ve been to a couple of Sunday afternoon times but they offer them throughout the week. The girls love to show me what they’ve been learning in class and they get to play with all the fun pool toys. It’s pretty enjoyable for me, too, plus I know they’ll be nice and worn out by the time we get home so I can get the house ready for the week ahead.

At Goldfish Swim School, they use a lot of repetition from week to week, repeating the same lesson plans and tracking how the students progress. As a parent, it’s great to see when the jump in knowledge happens – it seems like your child may not be catching on after a few lessons when all of a sudden it clicks and they can demonstrate a skill.

Kelsey has been getting better at her backstroke and freestyle. With forward swimming she’s slowly but surely putting the breathing into her strokes. I like that her instructor is trying to instill former form from the beginning so it won’t have to be corrected down the line just improved. She can also tread water with her face out of the water for about 15 seconds now which has been a huge improvement. I can’t say that I’ve heard of kids learning to tread water before so this was a pleasant surprise in their curriculum.

Aubrey is a pro at getting herself out of the pool safely. While she’s much more comfortable in the water, she’s still working on going underwater and relaxing while floating on her back. The next step will be to incorporate front swimming with stopping to roll on her back to take a few breathes. She always looks like she’s having a great time in class.

Once the student has checked off all of the skills in a particular level, they’ll progress to the next one and learn the next few elements, and so on.

The family swim times are a nice perk of membership and great for the kids to get a little more practice time. With two girls in class at the same I don’t always catch everything they are working on and we don’t have time to see everything they want to show me at pick up time so these are nice to check-in with how the kids are improving and feeling about their progress.

They also have member appreciation and themed events that are open to the public. Check them out for Trunk or Treat at Goldfish Swim School, Friday, October 27, 6p-8p. Sign up to pass out candy from your trunk and you could win a Goldfish Party! The event is free but, unfortunately, no swimming since they are anticipating high attendance.
